2024 ~ 40 Over 40

Pearls of Wisdom

STELLA GARCIA

What are your thoughts on aging?

Embrace your age as it’s a natural part of life, and each year brings new experiences, wisdom, and growth. It’s important to prioritize self-care whether physical, mental, or emotional well-being. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family members who uplift and inspire you. Practice gratitude by taking time to reflect on the blessings in your life and express gratitude for the experiences, relationships, and opportunities that have shaped who you are today. Focus on the things that bring you happiness and fulfillment. Surround yourself with positivity and let go of negativity that no longer serves you.

How is your age group relevant?

Women over 50 are incredibly relevant and bring a wealth of experience, wisdom, and skills to the table. We have valuable professional experience in various fields with expertise, knowledge, and leadership skills that make us valuable assets in the workforce. We often serve as mentors and role models for younger colleagues. Many are caregivers for their families, providing support and guidance to children, grandchildren, parents, or other family members. We serve as role models for women of all ages, demonstrating resilience, strength, and the ability to thrive and reinvent ourselves at any stage of life.

Younger women, might think that it's scary getting older. What wonderful things can women look forward to at your age?

Younger women can learn a great deal from women who are 40 years old and above. Older women often have a strong sense of self-confidence and self-assurance that comes from years of experience and self-discovery. We embrace our strengths, accept our flaws, and cultivate confidence. Learn the importance of self-care practices such as exercise, healthy eating, relaxation, and stress management to maintain overall well-being. We can serve as role models for embracing aging with grace, confidence, and a positive attitude.

Share tips on how you celebrate yourself, what you do for fun, and self care.

I enjoy traveling with my husband at least twice a year.  I also travel and celebrate with 6-8 friends every 5 years.  I pamper myself with spa days quarterly and massages monthly.  I engage in physical activity Monday through Friday before I go to work.  I also enjoy dancing, hiking, and going to the beach on the weekends.  I truly love spending time with my husband, reflecting on past achievements, and setting new goals.

What would you tell your 14-year-old self?

Be kind to yourself!  Practice self-compassion and don’t be too hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned. Treat yourself with the kindness you show to others.

Who inspired you as a little girl? Who inspires you now?

As a little girl, I was inspired by my parents who showed me love, support, hard work, and encouragement.

I feel a sense of pride when I see women in the Air Force rise in the ranks.

What was your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Imposter Syndrome.  I doubted my intellect every time I received a promotion.  I overcame it by reflecting on all the achievements during that timeframe and accepting that I had the abilities and traits to lead and grow an organization.

What is your definition of success?

Happiness!  Personal fulfillment and gratitude!  Having the love of my life after 27 years together!
