Pearls of Wisdom

What are your thoughts on aging?
I'll be turning 50 years young next month, and I'm feeling so many mixed emotions. Sometimes, I wish I was in my 20s like my three daughters, and sometimes, I wish I was a carefree 5-year-old again. But, as reality hits, I am a little nervous about the biological changes that happen with age. Aging comes with wisdom, confidence, and acceptance. Therefore, I also feel excited to face the new challenges my mature adulthood body and mind take me into.

Living here in Hawai’i is the best place for nature lovers. I love to swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. I also find peace and tranquility hiking the many trails all over the island. Both swimming and hiking are my favorite ways to exercise my body and soul. I also love to escape by catching a movie at the theater or visiting a museum.

My husband and I were my mother-in-law's primary caregivers in our home after she was discharged from a two-month stay at the hospital with ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome). She lived with us for 5 1/2 years until she peacefully passed away in our home. The experience was very difficult for us as we were the "sandwich generation" caring for our three young daughters as well. I had to stay strong by reminding myself this situation was a blessing and to teach my daughters that it is an honor to care for the elderly and sick, especially family.
